I’ve been away for a couple of weeks and have been struck by the way in which the false deity of global warming (part of the unholy trinity made up by the “God of the Greater Good”, his son the “God of I know what’s good for you” and the underlying spirit of “Benevolent Fascism” which infuses this religious movement) is used by different people in a different ways to further their own aims. “Global warming” like “excess population” is merely a fashionable deity which will be worshipped for as long as it serves as a convenient label to suspend rational thought and justify the unjustifiable.
I met some politicians who opportunistically saw “global warming” as a label and a slogan which enabled the levying of new taxes. The label was sufficient to dampen any objections from the taxpayers. Invariably the moneys raised were then to be disbursed on the politician’s pet causes but never on any actions connected – correctly or incorrectly – with the consequences of global warming. Not one of the politicians could point to a real, observable connection between man-made causes and an an effect on climate.
I met some developers who had not the slightest interest in the environment or sustainability or new energy sources except in that such projects could tap taxpayer subsidies and the grants that were involved. The subsidies and grants were in the gift of local politicians who in turn were quite happy to promulgate new taxes either because they were fashionably “green” or because they could cement the support of the vested parties for the next elections.
At a dinner party I met people from a variety of professions with each one convinced that – in some abstract sense – man-made global warming was real! But again not one could come up with an example of a real, observable climate change caused by man. Every one though had an anecdote about weather which was taken to be a clinching argument about climate even though no linkage to the assumed cause was evident. It was mindless political correctness on display with all rational thought suspended.
False deities are inevitable and are probably necessary in any functioning society in any age. But they are merely fashions which come and go. They are convenient labels which facilitate other objectives than what the label actually means.
“Global warming” is one of these. None of the taxes levied, technologies promoted, freedoms repressed, developers advantaged or people dispossessed will have any impact whatsoever on global warming (or cooling). But for a while and while the fashion lasts it provides a convenient label for those who would impose behaviour on others “for the greater good” or “for their own good” or “for the good of our grandchildren”. Our grandchildren will not thank us for these. They will be smarter than we are, will live longer than we do and they will resolve their problems in their own way. The problems that we perceive that they will have as a legacy from us will hardly be noticeable. But fashion will change and new deities will be found.
The search for such deities is already under way but none has yet risen to a state of such prominence as to have become the new fashion. “Sustainability” and the “protection of biodiversity” and “saving the planet” (from humankind for a selected portion of humankind?) are all contenders. As global cooling sets in over the next 20 – 30 years or population pressures after 2050 show that there is a shortage of young people, different slogans and different deities will have to be – and will be – found.
