from Xinhua
“The ice conditions in the Bohai Sea and the Yellow Sea this January may be more serious than that in the past years” reports Xinhua. Zheng Dong, chief meteorologist at the Yantai Marine Environment Monitoring Center under the state oceanic administrationsaid that the area under ice in Laizhou Bay was 291 square km this week.
Temperatures in China have plunged to their lowest in almost three decades, cold enough to freeze coastal waters and trap 1,000 ships in ice, official media said at the weekend.
The Shizuishan segment of the Yellow River is frozen due to persisiting cold weather in northwest China’s Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, Jan. 5, 2012. Two segments of the Yellow River in Ningxia region have been frozen up due to low temperature.
I would have thought it was just winter even if such conditions have not been seen for 3 decades. But – for political and religious correctness – it is no doubt all due to global warming and carbon dioxide!!

Down to -50C: Russians freeze to death…
Russia is enduring its harshest winter in over 70 years, with temperatures plunging as low as -50 degrees Celsius. Dozens of people have already died, and almost 150 have been hospitalized.
The country has not witnessed such a long cold spell since 1938, meteorologists said, with temperatures 10 to 15 degrees lower than the seasonal norm all over Russia.
Across the country, 45 people have died due to the cold, and 266 have been taken to hospitals. In total, 542 people were injured due to the freezing temperatures, RIA Novosti reported.
The Moscow region saw temperatures of -17 to -18 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, and the record cold temperatures are expected to linger for at least three more days. Thermometers in Siberia touched -50 degrees Celsius, which is also abnormal for December.

The cold spell, along with snowfalls, has disrupted flights all over the country, and led to huge traffic jams. In the southern city of Rostov-on-Don some highways were closed due to snowfalls over the past two days, triggering a traffic collapse. …
Over the weekend, meteorologists predict temperatures will plunge even lower in the Moscow region, hitting -25. The Russian capital is also expected to be swept with snow, RIA Novosti reported.

Are US politics and media channels driven by fear-mongering and alarmism?
By the time it hit the US coast, the storm system Sandy which had been hyped by an alarmist media, irresponsible insurance companies and a frightened set of politicians into the “worst storm ever to hit the US” had fizzled to be a tropical storm.
The National Hurricane Center has downgraded Sandy to a “post-tropical cyclone,” as it approaches the New Jersey coast.
It was no hurricane which hit the US coast.
It was no doubt a severe storm but was it really worth cancelling 8,000 flights for?

The official 4-month monsoon season in India ends today and the IMD has issued its last press release for this season.
Rainfall was lower than normal in the first two months (-22% at the end of July) and surged somewhat in the final two. The monsoon takes the shape of a skewed “U” and advances N-W and withdraws to the S-E. The withdrawal of the South-West monsoon is underway but it is slightly delayed and this late withdrawal also helps in bringing additional rainfall especially at the ends of the “U” in the North-West and the North-East (with flooding recently in Pakistan and Assam).

Withdrawal of 2012 monsoon: IMD
Until September 26th, total rainfall was running about 7% less than the long-term average and within “normal” limits.

2012 Monsoon – Cumulative rainfall till 26th September : IMD
Though total rainfall will be almost “normal”, agricultural production will be slightly disturbed because of the uneven rainfall during the 4 months.

The orthodoxy of the Temple of Climate Science have been busy this summer trying to link every “unusual” weather event to global warming. But every time I see a headline that some weather event has been the worst for 30 or 40 or 100 years, it only serves to illustrate that the same weather events also occurred 30 or 40 or 100 years ago. And when weather events today are similar to events before 1950 then they can only be further indicators that they are not linked to carbon dioxide emissions.
Even the IPCC realises that weather is not climate.

The Indian monsoon season officially covers the 4 months from June to September. Rainfall after the first 2 months was running some 25% less than “normal” and there were fears of severe effects not only directly on agricultural output but also for the knock-on effects on agriculture-related industry. But with 3 weeks left to go the rains seem to have recovered partially such that the total rainfall is running only 8% less than”normal”.
From IMD

2012 monsoon rainfall till 10th September / image IMD
At the end of July the rainfall map was dominated by “pink” deficient states and with even a couple of “yellow” scanty states. The situation has improved considerably though the late rains will not be as beneficial as they could have been a few weeks ago. Nevertheless, 2012 will probably be considered – statistically – a pretty average year and this monsoon will not be a “bad” one. Since the difference between a “good” monsoon (about +10 -15%) and a bad one (-15%) is thought to about 2% for the annual GDP, this partial recovery will come as a relief to many.

One summer (or one winter) does not a climate make – but ……..
The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) has posted its summary of the 2102 summer.
In summary, one can say that the summer of 2012 was the year when “hot air avoided Sweden with uncanny precision.”
The summer of 2012 was not one of the wettest and coldest, but was probably still a disappointment for most vacationers. There was not a single extended period of warmth, sunshine and clear blue skies throughout the summer. It is twelve years since it happened last. Previously, this type of summer occurred more frequently. 1987, 1993, 1998 and 2000 are examples.
Otherwise, there was absolutely no shortage of hot air over the Northern Hemisphere. But it avoided Sweden with uncanny precision.

I am off again on an assignment for a few days and blogging will be light.
It’s summer and where I’m going torrential rain or blistering sunshine with temperatures over 45 °C are quite normal for this time of year. If it is raining the temperature may be down to 25°C. So I’m prepared for a possible variation of some 20 deg C. It’s just weather.
I note the usual summer stories from around the world of heat waves in some places and “coldest” Junes in a 100 years in others. Some farmers are complaining about droughts and others are complaining about floods. Where societies have ignored repairs or have not built up their infrastructure to match the changing concentrations of urban populations – disasters occur. But I also note that when parts of the US declares that they have just had the hottest period for 50 years or 100 years or whatever and that this is “proof” of global warming they conveniently forget that 50 years ago or 100 years ago or whenever, man-made emissions of carbon dioxide were orders of magnitude lower. When weather records from a hundred years ago are broken it only proves that it was hotter/colder/stormier/wetter/drier or whatever long before the modern industrial age and before any significant man man-made carbon dioxide emissions. Breaking an old record only shows cyclic behaviour – not “runaway” behaviour!
It’s summer and people are on vacation and journalists are looking for stories and the silly season has begun!

It’s weather not climate of course.
But is it Global warming? or is it Global cooling? or just normal changes of climate which no so-called “climate scientist” understands or is capable of predicting.

On the calendar, today is the first of June which is supposed to be a real summer day. This means that we were supposed to have great sunshine and would be outside in our gardens basking – if not at work though.
But such is not the reality if you live in the Swedish town of Långsjöby a couple miles from Storuman in Västerbotten. Here it has been snowing enough that a few centimetres of snow is visibly gathering on the ground now. Visitors to the town from places such as Stockholm were surprised to find snow and some thought that they had been travelling in a time machine.

And yesterday on 2nd June the participants in the Stockholm marathon were met by a rainy, windy and cold day – the coldest in 84 years.
A 84-year cold record has been beaten in Stockholm. The temperature on Saturday reached no higher than 6 degrees.

UPDATE! Not just Sarajevo but even the UK is enjoying snow on the ides of May!
It’s weather of course and not climate. Or perhaps it should be called an extreme event caused by global warming.
The snow is expected to become heavy rain later this week.
AFP reports:
SARAJEVO — The Bosnian capital and its surroundings were covered by snow on Monday, the first time in half a century snow has settled in Sarajevo at this time of year, as temperatures plunged to just above freezing.
“The snow was nine centimetres (over three inches) high at 0500 GMT. It is the first time in the past 50 years that we have snow that remained in Sarajevo in May,” Dzenan Zulum of the national meteorological institute told AFP.
Zulum said snow had previously covered the capital in May in 1962 and 1953, adding that it also fell in Sarajevo in May 2005, but immediately melted.
Temperatures have plummeted in the past two days from 28 degrees Celsius (82 degrees Fahrenheit) on Saturday to 0.3 degrees Celsius on Monday. ….
