Sleaze and potential level of corruption rises in the Liam Fox / Adam Werrity affair

The Fox-Werrity scandal keeps growing. Liam Fox may have resigned but as the spotlight falls on his “best man” Adam Werrity, it becomes clear that the brain behind the subterfuge was that of Liam Fox. Adam Werrity was just a pretty boy with a pretty bad degree when he was selected and built up by Fox. (A 2.2 degree is pretty close to a “fail”). He took advantage of the position he was put into to effectively operate a slush fund to pay for his luxury jaunts – all ostensibly for facilitating the contacts between Fox and influential – and risch – backers. But what is clear is that he was nothing more than a front for Fox. If at any time Fox had withdrawn his backing for his “best friend man”, Werrity would have been a zero and he can not point to any real accomplishments of his own.

Werrity only shone in the light provided by his master.

To what extent Fox was running a shadow foreign and defence policy from behind the scenes to satisfy the interests of his backers is the real question that remains. How many defence contracts were placed as a result of the shadow Fox policy is also unknown. How far UK foreign policy was influenced by Fox and his backers is a mystery. I just listened to the UK Foreign Secretary, William Hague, on BBC Radio and his stonewalling of the question of Fox’s influence on UK foreign policy (in Sri Lanka particularly) only raised my suspicions that he too feels he has been duped by his friend. His only real defence (and hope perhaps) was that that government was so large that Fox’s influence could not have penetrated very far.

The Telegraph today is pretty scathing. Liam Fox: How his best man Adam Werritty brought him down. But it cannot be forgotten that Liam Fox was the one who built Werrity up in the first place.

Liam Fox has only himself to blame. Fiercely intellectual, politically astute and genuinely capable, Dr Fox has in the end come unstuck over a misguided but long-held friendship with a man 17 years his junior.

He met Adam Werritty when his future best man was still a teenager and nurtured him for close to 15 years. He installed Mr Werritty as the head of businesses and charities which had his backing, enabling them to travel the world often at the expense of others.

They may have worked hard but the pair played hard too. They dined together in the finest restaurants, enjoyed marathon drinking sessions and even indulged in occasional bouts of karaoke.

It might have been acceptable behaviour — a giddy mixture of business and pleasure — out of power. But for a Defence Secretary, presiding over multi-million pound contracts and cuts, it proved to be fatal. ….. 

Werrity is described brutally by The Telegraph as a handsome teenager who the years have not been kind to. And considering that Werrity was only about 18 when as an undergraduate he was singled out by the 35 year old Fox, it begins to seem like the case of a gullible – but not very bright teenager – being seduced and corrupted by a much older and cleverer and unscrupulous man.

Is the Liam Fox affair a repeat of the Profumo affair?

The UK press and blogs are full of the Liam Fox / Adam Werrity affair. The main stream media only write in euphemisms about the relationship between Fox and Werrity. The blogs of course are much more forthright in their suggestion that Fox is gay and Werrity his long time boy-friend. The constant reference to Werrity being Fox’s best man at his wedding is – I suppose – meant to imply that his marriage was a subterfuge to mask his being gay. The Profumo Affair was a 1963 British political scandal named after John Profumo, Secretary of State for War. His affair with Christine Keeler, the reputed mistress of an alleged Russian spy, followed by lying in the House of Commons when he was questioned about it, forced the resignation of Profumo and damaged the reputation of Prime Minister Harold Macmillan’s government. Macmillan himself resigned a few months later due to ill health.

For the historical comparison to hold:

  1. Adam Werrity would need to be the Minister’s lover (and the UK press always carefully refers to him as “his friend of 18 years and his best man”),
  2. Werrity would need to be in the pay of a “foreign power”. It seems apparent that Werrity has been financed by a number of conservative US lobby groups and some suggestion of Israeli and even Iranian lobby groups.
  3.  Werrity’s objectives would have to have been to influence Fox or to extract sensitive information (with or without Fox’s knowledge) for his paymasters.
By all accounts this could well be a case of history repeating itself.

UK Met office reported to be predicting a new little ice age!!

This report in GWPF where the UK Met Office is said to predicting a return of a little ice age is said to be based on a piece by Jonathan Leake in today’s Sunday Times (which I no longer read or access ever since they starting hiding behind a pay-wall). Somewhat surprising since it supports what I think is happening with our climate and especially since the Met Office, Nature, Jonathan Leake and the Sunday Times are all strong believers in the anthropogenic global warming orthodoxy.

Met Office U-Turn: Europe May be Facing Return Of ‘Little Ice Age’

Britain should brace itself for another freezing winter with the return of La Niña, a climate phenomenon known to disrupt global weather, ministers have warned.

La Niña, in which cold water piles up in the equatorial eastern Pacific, is linked to extreme winter weather in America. Some suggest that last year’s strong La Niña was linked to Britain’s icy winter, one of the coldest on record. The connection between La Niña and weather in Europe is scientifically uncertain but ministers have told transport organisations and emergency services to take no chances.

The warning coincides with research from the Met Office suggesting Europe could be facing a return of the “little ice age” that gripped Britain 300 years ago, causing decades of bitter winters. The prediction, to be published in Nature, is based on observations showing a slight fall in the sun’s emissions of ultraviolet radiation, which over a long period may trigger mini ice ages in Europe.

And now the UK reports a huge shale gas find – but WWF wants to ban it

“Peak-gas” moves further into the future as recoverable reserves of shale-gas are found in more countries. The coming gas glut is getting ever more real. Now the UK – which was thought to have little shale gas – has found reserves of about 5,700 billion cubic metres of shale gas in Lancashire. Poland -which was thought to be the richest in shale gas resources in Europe has recoverable reserves of about 5,400 billion cubic metres. Till now the British Geological Survey had thought the country possessed only about 150 billion cubic metres.

The map of the world’s shale gas reserves is changing rapidly as exploration for this previously ignored resource intensifies. The gas glut is going to provide relatively cheap options for the use of gas based electricity generation into the foreseeable future. In fact the increase in the cost of electricity which has been driven by the use of renewables and misplaced penalties for fossil fuel could finally be reversed. Needless to say the “environmental” industry – instead of welcoming the finding of new resources – is in a state of denial – and looking for every possible objection to the use of shale gas. The use of intermittent wind and solar power – apart from being so expensive when deployed – always needs back-up capacity and gas fired power generation is the only real option. The gas glut comes just in time for the recovery of the world economy which is now badly needed.

Wall Street Journal:  An area in northwest England may contain 200 trillion cubic feet of shale gas, putting it in the same league as some of the vast shale-gas plays that have transformed the U.S. energy industry. The figure for the area near Blackpool, released Wednesday by Cuadrilla Resources, a small oil-and-gas company with operations in England’s Bowland Shale, highlights the U.K.’s emerging position as a new frontier for unconventional gas exploration. But it inflamed environmental groups who say the technology used to extract shale gas is environmentally damaging.

The discovery of such vast resources—200 trillion cubic feet would be enough to meet U.K. gas demand for 64 years—comes at a time when the U.K.’s conventional gas fields are in steep decline and as it is becoming increasingly dependent on imports such as liquefied natural gas from Qatar and piped gas from Norway.

The response from the World Wildlife Fund was predictably alarmist.

In response to Cuadrilla’s announcement, the environmental group WWF called Wednesday for a moratorium on shale-gas production in the U.K. and said the country should be more focused on investing in renewables than increasing its reliance on fossil fuels. “The government should at the very least halt shale gas exploration in Britain until more research can be undertaken on both the climate-change impacts and contamination risks associated with shale gas,” said Jenny Banks, WWF-UK’s energy- and climate-change policy officer.

Jaguar Land-Rover thrives under Tata and fuels Tata Motors profits

When the Tata Group with Ratan Tata acquired Jaguar Land-Rover (JLR) in 2008 there were many disturbing and even depressing omens. The financial crisis of 2008 was just beginning to emerge. JLR was bleeding cash and Ford Motor Company were happy to bail out for the $2.3 billion that the Tata Group paid. In India Tata shareholders and analysts were concerned that they had bitten off more than they could chew. The Tata Group had relatively low debt and the levels of debt that they would have to take on not only for the acquisition but almost as much again for investment in JLR raised the fears that JLR could bring not only Tata Motors but the whole group down. The price was seen as being too high for what was considered a “vanity” acquisition. In the UK there were fears that the strong Jaguar and Land-Rover brands would be hurt badly by coming under Indian ownership. Jobs would be lost to Mumbai and technology would be stolen the story went. The company culture would be destroyed and innovation would come to an end. How could an Indian company messing around with a car like the Nano have the audacity to think that they could offer anything to two thoroughbred brands such as Jaguar and Land-Rover?

But 3 years on the story of JLR under Tata is an island of optimism in a gloomy sea. And it is not just optimism. The “vanity” acquisition has a gilded edge. JLR profits are up sharply and it contributes more than 50% of Tata Motors profits. An Indian company that dealt primarily with cheap small cars and trucks succeeded where Ford Motor Co and few others before had failed.

The Telegraph: Jaguar Land Rover is poised to deliver a major boost to the Government’s plans to boost growth by confirming this week that it will build a £400m engine plant in the Midlands that will potentially create up to 2,000 jobs.

JLR’s fortunes have undergone a dramatic transformation under the ownership of Indian group, Tata Motors, which bought Jaguar and Land Rover from Ford in 2008. …. 

The company was forced to turn to the Government for support in 2009 when car sales around the world crashed, but walked away from negotiations when Lord Peter Mandelson, the trade secretary, demanded strict terms including the right to appoint the chairman. The company then secured debt from commercial lenders and was able to reap the benefits of a surge in demand for Jaguars and Land Rovers in Asia.

In the year to March 31, JLR made a record pre-tax profit of £1.1bn after increasing sales by 26pc to 243,621. Under the leadership of chief executive Ralf Speth and Tata chairman Ratan Tata, JLR is investing £1.5bn a year in new products and has ambitions to drive production at its three Midland plants to 500,000 vehicles a year. The company has already hired 3,000 staff this year, including a record 350 graduates, and now employs almost 21,000 people in the UK.

JLR’s engines are currently supplied by Ford from plants including Bridgend and Dagenham in the UK…… 

Mr Tata also played down the loss of Carl-Peter Forster, who has stepped down as Tata Motors chief executive. He said: “The credit for the turnaround of Jaguar Land Rover goes to the management team and workforce. No single person can or should take credit.”

And the culture-clash that was feared just did not happen. Instead a new spirit seemed to be infused into JLR. Kevin Stride, the chief engineer of the highly-acclaimed XF program said in 2009

“There’s a real buzz around the brand at the moment, Even in a difficult world, there’s a buzz because we’re feeling empowered, we’ve got the right product line-up to go and tackle the world and we’re gaining some confidence. 
“If you went to people at different function levels in Jaguar Land Rover and asked what they thought of Tata, you’d get a big thumbs-up. It’s a good place to be at the moment. For individuals like myself, it’s changed for the better. We had a great relationship under Ford. People were cynical about that, but they were a very good company to work for. With Tata, it’s different, but different in a good way. …. We are held accountable very clearly as an independent company, whether in engineering or marketing or finance, we are held accountable for proper business performance, which in the old regime was a little filtered. It was very difficult to see cause and effect. We were not able to be as focused as we are now. ….. Tata has a very healthy way of approaching all the businesses they own. They don’t centralise it, they don’t put layers of bureaucracy in it. They evaluate the business model; if they like it, they buy the company and demand that they deliver on the business plan. You can’t just meander off and fail. ……. Cultural change is the hardest thing to do. It does take time. But we’ve been with Tata for a year, we are more agile already, people (within JLR) are questioning why we do things and if it adds value, and we are feeling more empowered to go and attack it. If it doesn’t make any sense and it adds another layer, let’s not do it any more.

…. Since Tata have come in, we’ve now got an insight into how they deal with Indian sources and sources within the whole of South-East Asia. My perception is that they are extremely focused businessmen and extremely principled in what they do, which is great coaching for us as a company. We’ve gone and looked at how they operate as a company – how they source components, how they design them, how they manufacture them – and we’ve got quite a bit to learn from them on the business side.

Jaguar is able to offer an insight into quality processes in the premium world. In terms of our engineering simulation and development, we’re pretty advanced for a company the size of Jaguar Land Rover. That’s something we’ll be able to provide benefit to the Tata Group in years to come”.

And the story is far from over yet. While cash management is the mantra of the moment, there are ambitious plans for the introduction of new models and upgrades of the existing ones in a long-term plan that runs until 2014. Tata Motors and JLR are now in “very intensive discussions” with a leading Chinese car maker about forming a historic joint venture that would see the company also produce its luxury cars in China.

CarAdvice: With tough economic times hurting sales of Tato’s famous Nano, Jaguar Land Rover are now generating a massive 57 percent of Tata’s revenue. The British brands have seen their pretax profit increase 20-fold to 1.12 billion pounds ($1.76 billion) for the fiscal year. As it stands today, Tata and its Jaguar Land Rover division is valued at over $12 billion.

It wasn’t just a matter of good fortune that the brands have become successful, in fact, Jaguar is still striving to improve with sales down 27 percent for the last quarter. Land Rover on the other hand, has seen significant growth (up 22 percent for last quarter) following strong demand for its upmarket SUVs.

The Range Rover Evoque  has already seen more than 20,000 pre-orders, despite not going on sale till September.

Tata is investing a massive $2.5 billion into Jaguar Land Rover product development each year to keep the flow of new products coming. This should see Jaguar offer a significantly larger range to turn the sales slide around. The multi-billion dollar annual investment will see the development or upgrade of 40 new vehicles across the two brands over the next five years. The two that we look forward to the most are the Jaguar C-X75 supercar and an entry-level sedan to rival the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and BMW 3 Series.

It will be tough for Jaguar to mount a serious challenge to Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz but perhaps with Tata Motors this is not impossible. And it will be a healthy and welcome development for the car industry.

Mosquitos increasing in the UK but global warming not blamed – yet

This is a very mildly interesting story from the BBC.

I read every word and realised that I continued reading long after it had ceased to be interesting only because I was waiting for the punch line that it “was all due to global warming”.

It never came.

But it will.

Based on a survey of UK local authorities, reports of mosquito bites over the last 10 years are 2.5 times greater than in the 10 years up to 1996. NHS Direct statistics show 9,061 calls in England complaining of bites and stings from early May this year to now – up nearly 15% from last summer. Not all bite complaints are due to mosquitoes – many can be attributed to bedbugs, midges and fleas.

But conditions in the UK, particularly in southeastern England, are increasingly hospitable to mosquitoes.

“The wet weather through May and June this year, along with a warm summer, has affected the population because mosquitoes like the standing breeding water,” says zoologist Michael Bonsall at Oxford University. …. 

But once upon a time, malaria-carrying mosquitoes could be found in the salt marshes of southeastern England. It is believed that malaria – literally “bad air” – dates back at least to Roman times in the UK, and outbreaks occurred as recently as the years just following World War I.

British doctor Ronald Ross, who discovered the malarial parasite living in the gastrointestinal tract of the Anopheles mosquito in the 19th Century, recruited teams to eliminate the larvae from stagnant pools and marshes. … 

Malaria in England had effectively died out by the 1950s, mostly due to the draining of much of the marshland where mosquitoes bred. But because of the growth of global travel, the number of imported cases of the disease in the UK has risen, with nearly 2,000 a year today.

David Cameron was “played” by News International

David Cameron’s judgement in employing Andy Coulson has already been brought into question. Apparently Coulson was also privy to confidential documents and meetings beyond his security clearance and that he was spared – or protected from – the highest level of security vetting. It has been suggested that his appointment may have been at the behest of Rupert Murdoch or Rebekah Brooks.

It now appears that Andy Coulson was working for two paymasters strengthening the impression that David Cameron was not just a “dupe” but that he was being “played” by News International. Presumably the real objective for News International was the acquisition of BSkyB.

Andy Coulson, the former editor of the News of the World who has been arrested on suspicion of involvement in phone hacking and bribing the police, received several hundred thousand pounds from News International after starting work as the Conservative Party’s Director of Communications in July 2007.

These payments were part of his severance package, under what is known as a “compromise agreement”.

According to sources, Mr Coulson’s contractual leaving pay was given to him in instalments until the end of 2007 – which means he continued to be financially linked to News International for several months of his tenure as David Cameron’s main media adviser. ….. Mr Coulson also continued to receive his News International work benefits, such as healthcare, for three years, and he kept his company car. ………

Seeking notoriety Paul Ray would now like to have been Breivik’s “Richard”

Paul Ray (Lionheart) from his safe haven in Malta is spending a lot of blog energy in insinuating that Alan Lake and not he is the “Richard” referred to in Anders Behring Breivik’s “manifesto”. Ray is or was a member of the English Defence League and was apparently expelled which he disputes.

But probably seeking all the notoriety he can get he has now admitted that he was in contact with the killer and concedes to The Telegraph that he may have been the inspiration for Breivik:

Paul Ray, a British blogger who calls himself “Lionheart” revealed that his opinions could have influenced Breivik’s Islamophobic diatribe, which the killer published online hours before he massacred 76 people.

Speaking from Malta, where he has fled fearing arrest for inciting racial hatred, Mr Ray conceded that he had been in direct contact with the 32-year-old gunman online.

In his manifesto Breivik described a character very similar to Mr Ray as a mentor, claiming to have met him at an event in London in 2002. Mr Ray said on Thursday: “I am being implicated as his mentor. I definitely could have been his inspiration.

“It looks like that. He has given me a platform and a profile. But what he did was pure evil. I could never use what he has done to further my own beliefs.”

The Daily Telegraph can also disclose that Mr Ray played host to Johnny “Mad Dog” Adair, former leader of the Ulster Freedom Fighters in Malta last February. … He is also known to be friends with Nick Greger, a German “known as Nazi Nick,” who describes himself as a “former neo-Nazi-leader, convicted terrorist, militiaman, artist, book writer and preacher”. ….. Mr Greger, who is banned from Britain, has traveled widely in Africa and currently lives in Malta, as does Mr Ray, who is originally from Luton, Bedfordshire. … Mr Ray was arrested in Britain in 2008 over blog postings allegedly inciting racial hatred but said he was never charged. He left the country the same year.

But he would love to be taken for being much more important than he is. He seems to be torn between avoiding any association with Breivik while at the same time he would be immensely gratified to have been the inspiration of anything to anybody. His incoherent ramblings would indicate that he is little more than a two-bit, publicity-seeking hoodlum skulking away in Malta – even if Breivik did take some inspiration from him.

Rebekah Brooks and NoW – another new low

NoW ‘targeted Sarah Payne mother’s phone’, a gift from Rebekah Brooks

Sara Payne, the mother of the murdered 8-year-old Sarah, has been reportedly told by Scotland Yard that her phone may have been hacked by Glenn Mulcaire, a private investigator working for the News of the World.

The phone is believed to have been given to Mrs Payne by Rebekah Brooks, the former News of the World editor who was forced to resign as chief executive of News International in the wake of the phone hacking scandal.

The allegations are particularly damaging because Mrs Brooks championed the cause of the Payne family and campaigned for ‘Sarah’s law’, a proposal to allow parents to know if sex offenders live in the area.

Friends of Mrs Payne told the Guardian she was “absolutely devastated and deeply disappointed” by the news.

“Former staff at the News of the World are understood to be underwhelmed by efforts by News International to find them work after they were handed a list of potential jobs which included posts in Siberia, Russia and Dubai”.

Could Paul Ray or Alan Lake be Anders Behring Breivik’s UK mentor?

Right wing bloggers are busy distancing themselves from Anders Behring Breivik. These include Robert Spencer, Baron Bodissey, Pam Geller, Carl in Jerusalem, EU Referendum, Lionheart and Fjordman among others. Some are mounting a defence of their views while trying to separate their ideologies from the actions in Norway.

The anti-immigration political parties in Scandinavia are busy trying to separate their ideologies and rantings from the “insanity” of Breivik’s actions. It is interesting that they are very quick to blame any terrorist action by any Islamist group onto Islam as a whole but are now desperately denying that their ideologies could have contributed any legitimacy to Breivik or to the massacre in Norway. This morning I listened to a spokesman for the Swedish Democrats on radio but he came across as being defensive, rather plaintive and peevish and suffering under the weight of unjust accusations.

The Freemasons in Norway and worldwide are are also trying to get as far away from Anders Behring Breivik and as quickly as possible.

The English Defence League is the most likely home of Breivik’s UK support. Paul Ray (Lionheart) of the English Defence League may be one of the favourites to be  “Richard” the UK mentor of Anders Behring Breivik.

But he is busy pointing the finger at Alan Lake.

It has been implied several places that due to the fact I use the name Lionheart on this blog and my anti-Islamic fundamentalism ideology is similar, not the same, as Anders Breivik that Richard could mean Richard the Lionheart, thus Lionheart could mean me.

I might be a Christian fundamentalist who has a deep dislike for Islamic fundamentalism who looks to Templarism as an example, but anyone who knows me knows that I personally would play no part in such inhumane savagery that has no place in the civilised world.

…….  and now the penny has finally dropped on who the most likely person is, who ‘Richard’ the English mentor of Anders Breivik is. EDL’s financier and political controller Alan Lake.

The “perfect knight” Norwegian terror suspect Anders Behring Breivik said he met at a 2002 London initiation ceremony of the Knights Templar is English Defence League financier and political controller Alan Lake, according to a self-proclaimed “founding father” of the group.

Ray, who calls himself one of “the founding fathers” of the right-wing English Defence League, and was arrested three years ago for “inciting racial hatred” with his blog. He writes under the penname “Lionheart,” named after King Richard I, who earned the name Lionheart for commanding armies as a teenager during the Third Crusade.

Alan Lake is not an unlikely contender. Lake is a 45 -year-old businessman from Highgate, North London, who claims to have made his money through computers, and runs a series of intranet services for far-right groups around the world. He also has strong links with the anti-immigration parties in Sweden and Norway. He spoke at a seminar organised by Kent Ekeroth of the Sweden Democrats in Malmö on 6 September 2009. In April 2010, Lake admitted to a Norwegian TV channel that he had helped to fund the EDL. Following the Utoya Massacre in Norway on 24 July 2011, Lake commented:  “Apparently, in a long screed Anders Behring Breivik posted on line, he did this attack to protest against the way that Islam is taking over large parts of Europe. By attacking the leftist politicians that are enabling this, the chickens have actually come home to roost – altho I’m sure it won’t be depicted that way”.
