Swedish media pretend that Women’s World Cup starting tomorrow is the real thing

June 5, 2015

There is a certain cowardice when “fashionable feminism” ignores common sense. It is just a little sad when being “fashionable” or “politically correct” leads to the non-exercise of the intellect (which is just my euphemism for stupidity). I have a great deal of respect for those who champion the equality of behaviour and fight for ways and means to foster that. But I have little respect for the “fashionable feminists” who cannot see that the term “gender equality” is, and should be, all about behaviour and not about genetics.

The “politically correct”, “fashionably feministic”, view in Sweden is that the tournament starting tomorrow in Canada is the Football World Cup and should be called that. But of course it isn’t. It is the Women’s World Cup 2015 and nothing else. The Football World Cup is something quite different and living in a fantasy world does not alter reality. Fortunately, FIFA didn’t agree. Of course being FIFA, if there was enough money offered, they might well have changed their minds. But even if they had, they would have been wrong. The Women’s Football World Cup is not the Football World Cup but there are those in the Swedish media (here and here for example) who do not exercise their minds very greatly in their eager quest to be fashionably feministic.

Just calling it the Football World Cup will not make it so. The men’s final at Wimbledon is something quite different to the women’s final. When we speak of the Wimbledon Final, without any qualifying gender, we mean, and we understand it to mean, the Men’s Final. The Women’s Football World Cup is just that – the football world cup for women. It is not, in fact, the real thing.

If the fashionable feminists mean that the women’s tournament should not be differentiated from the men’s tournament, then there should only be one tournament. As long as there are two different tournaments then some qualifying adjective is necessary. The primary differentiating parameter for the two tournaments is actually gender. If the fashionable feminists had exercised their minds they may have realised they had a case for insisting that FIFA use the word “Men’s” to qualify the real World Cup. But demanding that the women’s tournament be allowed to drop the qualifying gender is just stupid.

The “fashionable feminists” don’t seem to realise that “gender equality” is actually about equality of behaviour and is not about genetics. And those who believe that “gender equality” is not about behaviour but is about denying gender difference, are not exercising their minds or exhibiting much intelligence. Legislating for gender equality – rather than for equality of behaviour – can not remove gender difference and does not change behaviour.

The simple fact is that the gender characteristics of humans exhibit a binodal continuum. Gender is not therefore strictly dimorphic but the two nodes are very clear and they dominate in the distribution of gender characteristics among humans.

Denying the difference does not make it go away. For real “gender equality” everybody would have to lie in the transgender region.

TV 4 (which is planning to cover the tournament with a lot of women’s commercials interspersed with some women’s football) and the newspaper Aftonbladet (red/green in politics and very fashionably feministic) are outraged.

Aftonbladet: TV4 planned to refer to this summer’s World  Championships in Canada as the “FIFA World Cup”.
But Fifa has stopped the channel from doing so.
According to TV4 host Patrick Ekwall, FIFA has ordered that the tournament must be called “the FIFA Women’s World Cup” in the channel’s broadcasts.

As I have noted before:

A politically correct young lady from Sweden,

Insisted on being referred to as a “hen”,

She objected strenuously to “she”,

and quite violently to “he”,

Which caused consternation among her young men.

RSS YTD Temps Only 7th Highest Since 1998

December 8, 2014

Global warming PR always peaks at the time of a UN climate conference. Last week we had much weeping and gnashing of teeth about 2014 going to be the warmest year ever (based on adjusted temperature data sets). This week has started with glaciers melting everywhere.
In the meantime the satellite record shows that the pause in global temperature continues (over 18 years now) and that ice cover at the poles is pretty close to the average over the last 30 years.

A new, “warmer” header

August 25, 2014

I have changed the image on the header, partly because the colours of autumn – which is only just setting in -are quite breathtaking and yet very warm (though the image is from October 2013).

And I find that I am posting on whatever takes my fancy and not just about energy and environment – but they are all just opinions.

Climate and the butterfly in Brazil

June 22, 2014

You may think that the weather outside your window is a consequence of the prevailing climate. But that would be the cart before the horse. Without weather there is no climate.

Climate is to weather as evolution is to reproduction.

Evolution is just a label given to the result of many, many individual survival and reproduction events. Evolution is not a “force” which directs who will survive and who will not or which individuals will reproduce and who will not. Evolution is then the name we give to the resultant changes in the genetic make-up of species as individuals of that species survive and reproduce (or fail to reproduce where  the species goes extinct). The survival and reproduction of individuals changes as the environment they live in changes. Evolution is thus the global, net result of the millions of successful, local, individual matings, and of the many more millions of failures to reproduce. Natural selection is merely a record of those that manged to survive and reproduce and thereby “deselected” all the failures. Without environmental change first causing a change in which individuals survive and then reproduce, there can be no evolutionary change (except due to random mutations).  Similarly there is no great driving force called climate which determines the weather outside your window. Climate is the label we give to the summation of all the local weathers in a region or around the globe as being the climate of that region or of the world. Just as resulting evolution and evolutionary change is impacted by the local survival or failure of a species, so is resulting climate impacted by weather and by changes to local weather patterns. Climate is a calculated result, an average, of  myriads of local weather events

Without reproduction and consequent genetic change there is nothing to be called evolution. There is no evolutionary change if a species is genetically static – if it’s surroundings and its growth are unchanged.  Similarly there is no climate change if local weather patterns remain static. And without individual events of local weather there can be no average to be called climate.

The weather we each experience locally outside our windows covers a very wide range. Within a few minutes, on any day of the year we can experience temperature changes of  5 – 10ºC as clouds appear or it starts blowing or if it rains or if it snows. Winds can vary from virtually still upto over 100km/h in the midst of a storm. Every single day we see a change of around 10ºC between day and night. Over a period of a week it would not be unusual to have a temperature change of even 20ºC. Over a year a temperature variation of 60ºC (+35ºC on the warmest day to – 25ºC on the coldest) could be expected at my latitude.

Politically correct “climate science” today takes it for granted that any unpleasant warming of the earth, or uncomfortable cooling of the earth, or increased frequency of storms, or copious amounts of rainfall and any resulting flood, or no rainfall and any resulting drought, or any unduly severe hurricanes is – by virtue of its unpleasantness – due to man-made climate change. And man’s evil influence is all manifested by the emissions of carbon dioxide from fossil fuel combustion and the atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide!

But in the meantime it is mid-summers day and a cloud has passed over the sun. And when the cloud has passed I will feel a lot warmer than by increasing the carbon dioxide around me!!!!

In the 1960’s Edward Lorenz developed his chaos theory and in 1972 gave his famous talk questioning if the flap of a butterfly’s wings in Brazil could set off a tornado in Texas. (Lorenz Butterfly 1972).

Lorenz 1972

Lorenz 1972

Without reproduction there is no evolution and without local weather there is no climate.

Blaming fossil fuel combustion for climate change is like blaming one poor butterfly in Brazil and ignoring every other bird and insect flapping its wings.

Dies Natalis Solis Invicti MMXIII

December 24, 2013

It is my conviction (which is more than belief and somewhat less than science) that man is – and for the foreseeable future will be – incapable of overpowering the Sun. On any scale related to human capability it is Sol Invictus which applies. And the birthday of the Sun some 4.5 billion years ago was being celebrated long before it was  hijacked by Christianity around 354 AD. And one day the sun will die and we will have moved on (or we will have perished).

Just imagine, if you possibly can, a Sun devoid of its light,

No semblance of day and no trace of any night,

But there are those, like Icarus, who are still very naive,

Who in their arrogance, and at their peril, continue to believe,

That trivialising the Sun’s power is perfectly alright.

Greetings on the day of the birth of the Invincible Sun, 25th December 2013
