Valborg 2016 – Seeing in the 1st of May

April 30, 2016

For once it wasn’t snowing or raining on the eve of the 1st of May.

It was still a bit chilly though and the warmth of our local Valborg night (from the German Walpurgis night) bonfire was welcome.

Historically Valborg is derived from the Viking fertility celebrations that took place around April 30th, where the arrival of spring was celebrated with bonfires at night. The actual purpose of the fires was to scare off witches and evil spirits. A practical use for the bonfires was also to scare off predators such as foxes before the livestock were let out to graze on May 1st. In the Middle Ages, the pagan Spring ritual became associated with Saint Walpurga who was declared a saint during this time of the year.

A welcome to beautiful May.

Sköna maj, välkommen
till vår bygd igen!
Sköna maj, välkommen,
våra lekars vän!

Valborg 2016

Local variants of Walpurgis Night are observed across Europe in the Netherlands, Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Sweden, Lithuania, Latvia, Finland and Estonia.

Islamists abandoning the sinking Swedish Green Party

April 28, 2016

It seems quite clear that after the recent revelations, islamists no longer see the Green Party as a useful vehicle for promoting the caliphate or the introduction of Sharia law. No doubt there is a witch hunt going on within the party. The word has gone out to islamists, it seems, to abandon the sinking Green ship. It may be a deliberate strategy to leave the party before they are asked to leave.

Swedish democracy, which already unduly favours minorities, is being strained by having the Green Party in government.

Sweden currently has a government of the minority for the minority. A minority in which a minority Green Party has more say than they are entitled to. And a Green Party in which a minority radical islamist element has far greater say than they are entitled to.

It started last week with Mehmet Kaplan of the Swedish Green Party being sacked (“resigned”) as Housing Minister from the coalition government. But on every day since a new name of an islamic politician sneaking out (or being  smoked out) of the Green Party has emerged. The two leaders of the Green Party (mouthpieces) Åsa Romson and Gustav Fridolin have not resigned. Instead they have called for a “new start” and have asked their discredited nominating committee to investigate whether the party should be led by others or whether they should continue with a renewed mandate. By stating that they are prepared to continue they are trying to limit the calls for them to step down.

Most of the calls for resignation are directed against Åsa Romson who has been very accident prone in her choice of words (comparing the Mediterranean to Auschwitz, placing Auschwitz in Germany, calling 9/11 “an accident”….). However it has been Fridolin rather than Romson who seems to have been largely responsible for the infiltration of the Greens by radical islamists. His blind charge to get a multicultural membership – come what may – is now backfiring. Of course he is very young (32) and has very little experience, and it shows. As Education Minister in the coalition he has demonstrated his childishness.

The list of islamists leaving or taking a time-out or being forced out is growing:

Mehmet Kaplan – started the Swedish Muslims for Peace and Freedom, tried to promote the Erdogan line, consorted with Turkish right-wing groups, compared Israel to the Nazis, invited hard-line islamists to speak to the Swedish parliament, has publicly used the four-finger Muslim Brotherhood. Resigned as Housing Minister

Yasri Khan – Current Chairman of Swedish Muslims for Peace and Freedom. He was being proposed by the Green Party nominating committee as a member of the Steering Committee, refused to shake hands with women, refused to condemn capital punishment for apostasy, refused to condemn the treatment of bloggers in Saudi Arabia. Withdrew his candidature and stated he was leaving the Greens.

semanur taskin

Semanur Taskin – Leader (mouthpiece) of the Young Greens in Stockholm. Also a member of  Kaplan’s Swedish Muslims for Peace and Freedom and an Erdogan supporter. A very confused lady who supports the hijab but also sees the hijab as a symbol of oppression. Wants to introduce gender segregated swimming pools. Has abandoned the sinking ship that the Green Party is.

Derya Uzel Senir – Deputy to the Stockholm city council and a member of the Labour Market Board, Also a strong Erdogan supporter and a Armenian genocide denier. She has taken a time-out from all her Green party duties.

Kamal Al Rifai

Kamal al-Rifai – He is/was the Green Party deputy in Burlöv Municipality. He is also the leader of the Syrian Association in Malmö and has invited the controversial Saudi imam, Salman al-Ouda (one of Osama bin-Laden’s teachers) to speak (preach) at a fund raising event. He says he is no longer involved with the Green Party.

7-8 IS terrorists have entered Sweden – warns Iraq

April 26, 2016

Next to Belgium, Sweden has sent most radicalised muslims from Europe to join IS. And many are coming back – with murderous intent.

BBC: Swedish intelligence service Sapo is investigating a possible terror threat to the capital, Stockholm …… Iraqi authorities had informed Sweden that seven or eight militants from the so-called Islamic State group had travelled to Sweden, newspapers reported.

According to Swedish newspapers, soft, civilian targets in Stockholm are the object of the terrorist missions. Seven or eight IS terrorists are said to already have entered Sweden. The security service are in a state of heightened readiness though the terror alert level has not been increased from its current level of 2 (on a 5 point scale).

Just a month ago a NATO general warned of the terrorists returning to Europe masked by the refugees.

…. In testimony to the Senate armed services committee, US general Philip Breedlove said that the Islamic State terror group is “spreading like a cancer” among refugees. The group’s members are “taking advantage of paths of least resistance, threatening European nations and our own”, he added. …. Breedlove distinguished between “criminality, terrorist and foreign fighters”, and said that he has seen news reports saying as many as 1,500 fighters have returned to Europe.

……. congressional estimates of how many foreign fighters have traveled to Syria vary widely, with 1,500 toward the higher end of numbers of fighters reported to have returned to western nations.

The IS goal of bringing Europe into the caliphate is by creating muslim societies which can be isolated from and run in parallel with the societies where they exist. Establishing no-go areas within isolated ghettos where Sharia law can be imposed is part of that. Effective no-go areas are already  evident in many large European cities (Brussels, London, Paris, Berlin, Stockholm and Malmö to name just a few). The liberal, left promotion of multiculturalism – rather than integration – over the last 4 decades has only helped IS in this goal of creating separated, isolated, parallel societies where their word can hold sway. The sudden focus on integration – rather than multiculturalism – is welcome but has come far too late. It may be too little. One of the key elements of integration is in providing immigrants and refugees with gainful employment rather than living on social handouts. And the trade unions are the biggest obstacle not only to recreating the thousands of “low-paid” jobs which don’t exist any longer, but also in hindering small employers from taking on non-unionised labour.

Why is the Swedish Green Party still in government? (Green Party probably infiltrated by extremists)

April 22, 2016

UPDATE! It seems my assessment that the Swedish Green Party has been infiltrated and some sections hijacked by islamist extremists is shared by researchers at the Centre for Asymmetric Threats and Terrorism Studies at the Swedish National Defence College.

AftonbladetLars Nicander, Director of the Center for Asymmetric Threat Studies at the Swedish National Defence College, fears that the Green Party has been infiltrated by Islamists.
He draws parallels to the Soviet Union who tried to infiltrate political parties and organizations during the Cold War.
“People who seem to have links with or sympathy for the Muslim Brotherhood have obviously gained a foothold in the Green Party”, says Lars Nicander.

How on earth can the Social Democrats continue to have the Greens within government?

The 4 finger Muslim Brotherhood sign used in Egypt has been used by a number of islamists within the Green Party.

That radicals and extremists have always looked for cover within existing parties or organisations is a phenomenon which has taken off after the fall of communism. Former communists usually find a hiding place among so called Social Democrats or other left-of-centre parties, since it is no longer politically viable to retain the name “Communist”. In Sweden for example, the former Communist Party has tried to rebrand itself as the “Left party” though the members remain essentially communist. Radical left sympathisers have also found a cloak of respectability within supposedly environmental organisations such as the World Wildlife Fund, The Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace and the like. Many of the programmes and actions ascribed to these organisations have effectively been hijacked by hard-left extremists who have no other home.

The same technique of hiding within sight under the cover of an existing organisation as used by the loony left is being adopted by radical islamist groups in Europe. They cannot openly form radical islamist parties in Europe, but they can join other organisations which are naive enough and gullible enough to allow them in. They are helped in this infiltration exercise by the reluctance of anybody to scrutinise them too closely, because – by the rules of political correctness – that would be racist. In Sweden it has been the Green Party which has been the most naive and gullible and so keen to avoid any charges of being racist, that it has been heavily infiltrated by radical islamists. There are some local sections of the Greens which have not just been infiltrated but have been hijacked by extremists.

The fall-out from the last weeks revelations of the extremist connections of the Green Party’s Housing Minister, Mehmet Kaplan, which led to his resignation are now exposing some of this. The head of the Swedish Young Muslims, Yasri Khan was a member and was being nominated for the Greens governing body when it was revealed that he would not shake a woman reporter’s hand. The naivete of the nominating committee (combined with an amazing cowardice) borders on gross negligence. Though his view of women was well known within the party, as was his reluctance to condemn the death penalty for apostasy, it was not shaking the reporter’s hand which exploded in the media. He had little choice but to turn tail and run. He subsequently withdrew his candidature for the governing committee and even said he was leaving the party. Both Khan and Kaplan have very strong connections to Turkish far-right and Erdogan support groups. They and others have even inveigled local sections of the Green Party to make trips to Turkey in support of Erdogan supporters. Erdogan’s supporters seem to be very well represented in the Party.

In any event, the reaction of feminist Sweden to the reluctance to take the hand of “unclean” women has exploded like a bomb in the face of the Green Party. The contemptuous part was that the “mouthpieces” (euphemism for leaders), Romson and Fridolin, did not – and still do not – quite understand how their party has been infiltrated and hijacked. Their own set of values too are highly suspect. They are both probably too young to have any conception of what the Nazis did to the Jews. For some inexplicable reason, the nominating committee are not being sacked on the spot for their gross incompetence. And now the Party is reduced to sending out instructions to the entire party – as if they were a bunch of rowdy toddlers – on how they are to behave, in the form of an open letter. The letter is signed by Fridolin and Romson — who could perhaps do with some behavioural therapy themselves.

The Greens came into the coalition government in 2014 even though they had the support of just 6.9% of the voters. That itself gave them a power position entirely out of proportion to their support. The Social Democrats needed them to stay in power. Their support is crumbling and yet Steafan Löfven and the Social Democrats have not the courage to dump them. To make matters worse the Moderates – who are in opposition but do not oppose – have not the courage either to face an early election by causing the government to fall.

Sweden currently has a government of the minority for the minority. A minority in which a minority Green Party has more say than they are entitled to. And a Green Party in which a minority radical islamist element has far greater say than they are entitled to.

Swedish Green Party leader more concerned about the effect on Muslims after 9/11 “accidents”

April 19, 2016

The Swedish Green Party is living in some fantasy dream world of its own. The 9/11 atrocities were merely “accidents” and their concern is more for Muslim communities who felt the backlash after the attack than for the 3,000 victims of the Islamic terror attacks.

"An accident" according to Åsa Romson

“An accident” according to Åsa Romson

Their leader, Åsa Romson, euphemistically called a “spokesperson” (in Swedish literally a “mouthpiece”!), was on TV this morning defending her party member Mehmet Kaplan who resigned yesterday as Housing Minister. He resigned (actually was fired) because it was revealed that he was in the habit of hobnobbing with Islamic extremists and neo-fascists and for his rather stupid comparisons of Israelis to Nazis. Åsa Romson, this morning, was still in admiration of his “values” and then revealed her own mind-set when she applauded him for helping the Muslim community during the backlash after the “9/11 accidents”.

It was almost unbelievable that she could so nonchalantly dismiss the almost 3,000 people who were murdered by islamic terrorists (Al Qaida) on that day as being the victims of an accident. She later defended her ridiculous statement by saying that she was focusing on the travails of the Muslim community and their isolation and on the difficulties of integration.

In her warped and twisted world, it seems the backlash against Muslim communities was more important than the terrorist atrocity that claimed  3,000 victims and the effects on their families. That Muslim communities (not all but many) celebrated the 9/11 atrocities was of little concern.

She also has the dubious distinction of claiming that the plight of refugees to Europe was to be compared to Auschwitz (but she actually thought that Auschwitz was somewhere in southern Germany). Even for a Green politician – who all lack common sense – she is/was remarkably uninformed, callous and insensitive. The terrorists and extremists can never be challenged with the Åsa Romsons of this world sitting in government.

Stefan Löfven and the ruling Social Democrats in Sweden do not have the courage to dump the Greens from the coalition government – though many would like them to. Unfortunately the Moderate Party in opposition does not either have the courage to do what they are supposed to  – oppose.

And so we are left with the Greens continuing in government while inhabiting their own rose-coloured, fantasy world. And Sweden’s reputation for being a place where extremists and terrorists are not jut tolerated, but actively protected by politicians in government, grows. Åsa Romson is Deputy Prime Minister and her stupidities cannot be construed as anything but being a representation of the Government’s views.

Her position is untenable. She really does have to go.

Kaplan in deep s**t as film emerges of him equating Israelis to the Nazis

April 17, 2016

UPDATE 2: Well, he resigned.

But the Green Party have not distanced themselves from him. He remains in parliament and in the Party. Their “principles” are fundamentally compromised.

The Prime Minister reacted very late and not very decisively. He too refrained from condemning Kaplan’s thoughtless language and his hobnobbing with extremists.

UPDATE to previous post on Green Party and antisemitism:

Today Sunday 17th April, SvD reported that Kaplan has been caught on film from 2009 on Somali Star TV where he equates the Nazi treatment of Jews in the 1930s to Israel’s treatment of Palestinians.

His position is untenable and he will have to go.

He does not have any good options left.

  1. He can resign as Minister and from parliament and resign from the Green party — this is the best outcome for the Greens who will still be tarred by the anti-semitism brush.
  2. He can resign as Minister and remain in Parliament as a Green representative – which will only prove the Green indecisiveness and their unsuitability for government.
  3. He can be sacked by Stefan Löfven which will win Löfven some brownie points.

M Kaplan

The critical thing is that both the Greens and the Social Democrats need to distance themselves – fast – from Kaplan. The longer the Greens remain supporting him the greater the hit they will take. The longer Löfven does not speak out publicly against Kaplan the more indecisive and weak he will appear. The Greens and the Social Democrats have to wake up to the fact that the damage has already been done. Now it is how good they are at damage control which is the question.

But Mehmet Kaplan is toast.

Good riddance (one, because he is an apologist for islamist extremism; two, because he is apparently incompetent: three, because he is a token of multiculturalism with the Greens; and four, because he is a Green).

Is Sweden’s Green party fundamentally anti-semitic?

April 16, 2016

The Green Party’s Mehmet Kaplan who is the housing minister in the Swedish coalition government is currently in hot water after photographs were released showing him hobnobbing with Turkish, far right, neo-fascist extremists. He is seen at the same table as Barbaros Leylani (“death to the Armenian dogs”) and president of the Swedish branch of the neo-fascist Grey Wolves Ilhan Senturk.

This is not the first time Kaplan has been linked to extremist, islamic and anti-semitic organisations. As housing minister he is seen as incompetent and has also surrounded himself with an unprofessional personal staff. He is still in government as part of the price that Prime Minister Stefan Löfven and the Social Democrats have to pay for keeping their coalition going with the Greens.

(The Green Party leader is environment minister. She along with the culture and education ministers, who are also from the Greens, have not distinguished themselves particularly. But they cannot be accused of being extremist or anti-semitic – only of being incompetent and desperate to stay in government).

Kaplan however has been linked to islamic militants for some time.

  1. In 2014, Turkish-origin former Social Democrat member of parliament Nalin Pekgul accused Mr. Kaplan of being an “Islamist” with a “hidden agenda”. Writing a scathing editorial in a Swedish newspaper, the politician said that with Kaplan’s appointment to the ministry the government had “sent a clear signal to Sweden’s Muslims that the Islamists now have the support of the Swedish establishment”.
  2. Kaplan was also unthinking enough to equate Swedes joining IS with Finns fighting against Russians during WW2. Also a remarkable display of ignorance of history and an apologist remark – in any interpretation – for the IS.
  3. Mehmet Kaplan was arrested in 2010 by Israeli forces after participating in the Mavi Marmara flotilla, which was headed to the Gaza Strip. The Turkish-born MP was later deported from Israel over his involvement.
  4. During Operation Protective Edge in Gaza, Kaplan called for the “liberation of Jerusalem” at a pro-Palestinian rally.
  5. When the Mohammed cartoons were published in Denmark, he thought it was deplorable and not applicable as an expression of freedom of speech.
  6. Kaplan hosted a conference in the Swedish parliament where he invited Yvonne Ridley, a member of the English Respect Party and a rabid anti-semite. He also invited hate preacher Riyadh ul Haq.

The Green Party leader Åsa Romson is also – like Jeremy Corbyn’s extreme labour supporters – so enamoured of the Palestinian cause that she often strays into anti-semitic territory.

Green party “co-spokesperson” (a euphemism for “leader”) Åsa Romson has once again demonstrated that the greens have great difficulty in making the transition from being demonstrators on the streets to actually being in government. Åsa Romson is even the Deputy Prime Minister. She has been silly enough to first compare the Mediterranean to Auschwitz and then to refer to the Roma as “zigenare” which means gypsy and as a term has officially been declared to be “offensive”.

Anti-semitism crops up regularly among local Green politicians. Birgitta Hansen of the Stockholm Greens has said the Israelis “behave like the Nazis – only worse”. Another local Green politician Jerker Nordlund has called Israel “mentally sick” and called for a global war against Israel.

The Greens claim that they have no more than a “usual” number of anti-semites among their members. But I note that 17 of 21 local Green parties have expressed their support for Kaplan. They try to excuse themselves by saying they are pro-Palestine and anti-Israel and not anti-semitic, but methinks they do protest too much.

Green Parties around the world have become a safe haven for former communists and far-left extremists. And among the far left (as with the far right) there is very hard core of fascists and anti-semites. Unfortunately the sanctimonious, self-righteous sections of the Greens are often too naive – or too stupid – to realise when they have been hijacked. The Green Party in Sweden contains a hard core of anti-semites. In Kaplan they also seem to have an apologist for islamic extremism and a not particularly good minister.

US warship playing in Russia’s backyard is buzzed by Russian aircraft — what else?

April 14, 2016

The US Navy and a compliant press corps in the US and in Europe are making a great to-do about Russian aircraft buzzing a US warship playing war-games, in the Baltic. A long way from home and in the Russians’ backyard.

What's a US warship doing in the Baltic?

What’s a US warship doing in the Baltic?

What did they expect?

If a Russian warship was carrying out exercises just off the US coast, the US military would be castigated if it did not challenge such games.

NATO – after Turkey and Ukraine and Libya – is proving to be irresponsible. In Syria they could not do in 5 years what the Russians seem to have done in 6 months.

Baltic Sea Region

Baltic Sea Region

The Swedish military and the defence industry are pushing for Sweden to join NATO. I suspect that could be just the provocation needed for the Russians to do to the Baltic what the Chinese are doing in the South China Sea. Take over a few islands, build some airstrips and military bases and redefine the extent of domestic waters. It may not be Gotland in the first instance but Sweden joining NATO will increase the risk in the Baltic – not reduce it.

NATO expansionism creates a greater risk of WW3 than Russian aggression in Russian dominated areas of the old Soviet Union.

US Navy Press Release:

A United States Navy destroyer operating in international waters in the Baltic Sea experienced several close interactions by Russian aircraft April 11 and 12.

USS Donald Cook (DDG 75) encountered multiple, aggressive flight maneuvers by Russian aircraft that were performed within close proximity of the ship.

On April 11, Donald Cook was conducting deck landing drills with an allied military helicopter when two Russian SU-24 jets made numerous close-range and low altitude passes at approximately 3 p.m. local. One of the passes, which occurred while the allied helicopter was refueling on the deck of Donald Cook, was deemed unsafe by the ship’s commanding officer. As a safety precaution, flight operations were suspended until the SU-24s departed the area.

On April 12, while Donald Cook was operating in international waters in the Baltic Sea, a Russian KA-27 Helix helicopter conducted circles at low altitude around the ship, seven in total, at approximately 5 p.m. local. The helicopter passes were also deemed unsafe and unprofessional by the ship’s commanding officer. About 40 minutes following the interaction with the Russian helicopter, two Russian SU-24 jets made numerous close-range and low altitude passes, 11 in total. The Russian aircraft flew in a simulated attack profile and failed to respond to repeated safety advisories in both English and Russian. USS Donald Cook’s commanding officer deemed several of these maneuvers as unsafe and unprofessional.

After Syria, there is some irony in the US military accusing the Russians of unprofessionalism. Or maybe I’m thinking of competence rather than professionalism.

Sweden tries to buy votes for Security Council place

April 5, 2016

Five UN Security Council places (non-permanent) come up for election in June 2016. Sweden is competing against Italy and the Netherlands for the “Western European and Others” place.

The elections are for five non-permanent seats on the UN Security Council for two-year mandates commencing on 1 January 2017. The five members will serve on the Security Council for the 2017–18 period.

No doubt there is heavy lobbying going on. A UNSC place is seen as a strategic – and ideological – objective by the Social Democrat /Environment party government. The Social Democrats especially see the UN as a minor God and they have already canonised themselves as Saints. (Their sanctimonious self-image has been dented lately as they have been forced to take less than “friendly” actions in stopping the influx of “refugees”).

In any event, the Social Democrats were faced with the problem of how to fund their lobbying activities while not seeming to bribe “poor” countries for their votes and tarnishing their own self-righteous, self-image of propriety. So they chose a round-about method of inviting 27 UN ambassadors of “poor countries” to an all expenses-paid jaunt in Sweden under the guise of an “environment seminar”. They funded the whole business through a number of intermediary institutions to hide the fact that the money was coming from the Foreign Aid budget and that the whole “bribery tourism” was organised by the Foreign Ministry. The Foreign Ministry arranged the “gift packages ” for the UN ambassadors (note that those invited were not environment ministers but UN ambassadors). It is not often that UN ambassadors get their business class air tickets and five-star hotel bills paid for by a foreign country. What exactly was contained within the “gift packages” is not known. The environment seminar, just for these 27 country ambassadors, was an attempt by Sweden to cash in on its “environment credentials” just before the Paris conference. A similar jamboree was also arranged in March 2015.

By FIFA standards, the Swedish bribes were just small potatoes and normally I would expect Italy and the Netherlands to have provided more. But a  UNSC place is probably of more prestige value to the Social Democrats in Sweden. There is nothing wrong, I think, in lobbying. It is trying to hide it which is despicable. The sanctimonious, self-righteous facade which covers Swedish foreign policy is always despicable but it has reached new heights (or should it be depths) with this government. If it was all for the interests of the country it wouldn’t matter much, but for the Social Democrats, ideology often overrides country interests (Palestine, Saudi Arabia, the PKK ….).

(I observe that the left parties in Europe and including the Social Democrats in Sweden, in their ideological zeal to support the Palestinians often come close to being anti-semitic. And they get into a tangle when supporting a Kurdistan).

Swedish Television:

Ambassadors from 27 island nations and poor countries were treated to a free trip to Sweden in August. The official reason for the visit was a climate seminar. The bills running into millions were sent to the  Dag Hammarskjöld Foundation, who in turn received 14 million kronor of Sida’s aid money.

The common factor for the visitors was that they each have one vote in the UN General Assembly, which in June will appoint new members to the Security Council.

To get a seat in the UN Security Council has been one of the current government’s major foreign policy goals. …..

After the disclosure the government … writes that aid money was also used at another opportunity to invite UN Ambassadors on a trip to Sweden. On March 10,  27 representatives of several small island states met the Aid Minister Isabella Lövin (MP) and Foreign Minister Margot Wallström (S), during a visit to Sweden at the invitation of the Dag Hammarksköld Foundation. ….

…… Niclas Kvarnström Manager of the Security Council candidacy, said that the UN ambassadors’ visit was a collaboration between the Foundation and the Foreign Ministry. …..

During the visit, the ambassadors lunched with Foreign Minister Margot Wallstrom, had coffee with Aid Minister Isabella Lövin and had dinner with Prime Minister Stefan Löfven.

But the program was not mentioned publicly …. and they made no press releases.

The UN ambassadors also met Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel who received them at the  royal palace.

The Social Democrats together with the Environmental party makes for a dangerous mix. They are particularly good at “Do as I say and ignore what I do”

In Scandinavia, Sweden becomes the example not to follow for integration of immigrants

March 31, 2016

Parts of Stockholm and Malmö and Göteborg have now some areas which are dominated by immigrant communities. With multiculturalism (as opposed to multi-ethnic under a common culture) made into a god of political correctness, Sweden has done relatively little to ensure the integration of immigrants into the country. That, in turn, has led to the congregation of immigrants into just a few areas and their subsequent segregation.

Both Denmark and Norway are now using Sweden as the cautionary tale and of how not to manage integration.

The LocalNorway’s integration minister has called for tighter immigration policies – to avoid the country becoming like Sweden.

Sylvi Listhaug used Sweden as the cautionary tale when speaking about recent terror attacks in Europe, as well as a package of asylum reforms due before the Norwegian parliament shortly.

“Many of those who have carried out terror attacks in Europe are born and raised in France and Belgium. It shows how important it is to succeed with integration and that is again connected to how many come to Norway. Therefore a tight immigration policy is important,” she said.

In the aftermath of the terror attacks in Brussels, there has been a debate in Norway on so-called parallel societies and neighbourhoods where the police don’t dare to patrol. Listhaug acknowledged that the problem exists.

“We have foreign fighters who have left Norway and [we have] radical environments. We should not stick our heads in the sand and say that everything is good here. But fortunately we are a long way from the conditions we see in some other countries, for example Sweden,” she told NTB.

The difference between multiculturalism with a fractured society and a multi-ethnic society with a common over-riding culture, is one of my hobby-horses.

A “society” – to be a society – can be multi-ethnic but not multicultural

Of course one can have – if one wishes – many different cultures within different sub-societies in a single geographic area. But if these sub-cultures are not subordinated to a larger culture then the sub-societies cannot – because it becomes a fatal contradiction – make up any larger society. Multiculturalism dooms that geographical area to inevitably be a splintered and fractured “greater” society – if at all.
